Another beautiful chandelier made from garbage. Can you believe it’s nothing but plastic bottles? I can’t wait to have or make something like this of my own. My dreams of our next home get bigger and bigger every day. Probably because we’re about to list! In just 24 short hours, our home of 5 years will be up for grabs. It’s somewhat heartbreaking because we just love it here. Our neighborhood isn’t usually what you picture when you think of a big city… big tree lined streets, kids and dogs everywhere, big bungalows and who could forget our media-hounded neighbor, Blago. Wherever we end up, I know it’ll be great because I’m bringing my 3 best buds with me - Kyle (the hubby), Jane (the tortoise) and June (the boo face).

The word “manifesto” has been a hot topic lately. What’s a manifesto? It’s a small list of principles - about 10 - that you believe in and constantly strive to stand by.

I’ve heard this idea mentioned a few times in articles and presentations, which gets me (and Kyle) thinking about our own. We hadn’t thought about writing one, but it sounds like an invaluable tool and a trusty little guide. At the age of 20, Benjamin Franklin wrote a manifesto, or Virtues to Live By, on a little piece of paper and carried the list around with him for his entire life, always referring to it when making decisions. The 99 Percent shared 5 of their favorite manifestos in a recent article to spark your imagination. One of my favorite manifestos is by Milton Glaser. But he refers to it as 10 Things I’ve Learned. I love getting a glimpse into his thoughts and reading along while he reflects on such things. All of this inspires me to write my own… even if it ends up not being much :]

London-based design studio, FL@33, just released The 3D Type Book, an inspiring smattering of 3D typography examples from over 160 designers. Oddly enough, the foreword is written by one of my design profs from college, Andrew Byrom. Some of his works are included in the book among other industry favorites like Sagmeister, Marian Bantjes, Non-Format, Milton Glaser, Frost Design and Post Typography. mmMmm delicious. Update April 4, 2011: I was fooled! This rebranding for Home Depot was an April Fool’s joke by Armin Vit. Nice.

Home Depot redesigned their logo and I’m in love. That H icon is just too beautiful for words. It’s incredibly recognizable, ownable, simple and timeless. Love the slab serif font that goes with the H on the gift cards… I think the words “Home Depot” would’ve looked better in a font like this versus being in all caps. Regardless, this re-branding effort deserves 5 gold painted stars.

I think this is one of prettiest and most clever wrapping paper ideas I’ve ever seen. I have roll after roll of different patterns and colors for just the right occasion and it starts to take over the closet. This typographic beauty can consolidate it all into one and say anything from “Happy Birthday” to a good old “I love you” and everything in between.

It looks like this might be a side project of European Designer, Fabio Milito. Unfortunately for us, he’s all sold out at the moment.

The MIT Media Lab has a fresh new logo that was based on an algorithm, creating 40,000 logo shapes in 12 different color combinations. The brains behind it are two independent designers, Richard The and E Roon Kang. This goes to show that two heads are just as good as one big agency :]
